Dr. Mechtler is the Medical Director of the Dent Neurology Institute and the Head of Neuro-Oncology at Roswell Park (NY, USA). He is also a professor of neurology and neuro-oncology at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Born in Australia, he moved with his parents to the United States, where he completed his high school education. He earned his medical degree in Hungarian at Semmelweis University in 1984, a personal commitment that shaped his lifelong connection to Hungary. He completed his specialist training in the United States, obtaining certifications in neurology, neuroimaging, and neuro-oncology.
He has served as president of the American Association of Neuroimaging and the Hungarian American Medical Association. At his initiative, since the early 1990s, over 500 Hungarian students have had the opportunity to participate in study visits in the United States as part of their university education, for which he was awarded a high national state honor in Hungary in 2018.
He is an active university professor, researcher, and practicing physician. He is an internationally recognized leading authority in headache, neuro-oncology, pain research, and medical cannabis research. He publishes in the world’s leading specialty journals and is author of numerous textbooks. The Budapest MiND Institute was founded at his initiative after several years of development and preparation.
