Despite significant technological advancements in recent decades, fundamental surgical techniques in neurosurgery have changed little. Microsurgical technology, which became the global gold standard with the introduction of the surgical microscope in the 1970s, remains central. Since then, computer-assisted planning, neuronavigation, digital 3D imaging, and improved microscopes and instruments have become routine, but the underlying methods have not fundamentally changed.

Goal of Development: Enhancing Existing Technology

Microsurgical procedures have limitations: lesions are visible only from a straight-line perspective, and the use of large, heavy microscopes can force uncomfortable postures and limit visibility of critical structures, potentially affecting the surgeon’s performance. Large and traumatic exposures from the early era of microsurgery are still common because they provided surgeons with a sense of safety. Change in the field is gradual, as every innovation initially brings uncertainty.

Pioneering Solution: Keyhole Surgery and Endoscope-Assisted Microsurgery

Modern neurosurgery pioneer Prof. Axel Perneczky introduced new concepts, instruments, and techniques in the 1990s. The use of endoscopes was a breakthrough in overcoming the limitations of microsurgery. This new approach became known worldwide as keyhole surgery, and endoscope-assisted microsurgery has since revolutionized the field.

Prof. Róbert Reisch—who also provides online consultations at MiND Clinic—had the exceptional opportunity to train directly under this pioneering mentor, mastering these new concepts firsthand. Years of collaboration, scientific publications, and clinical results have demonstrated that these modern neurosurgical techniques surpass traditional methods.

Dr. László Entz, head of the neurosurgery department at MiND Clinic, trained in modern neurosurgical and spinal procedures in Zurich under Professors Reisch and Dezső Jeszenszky, gaining first-hand experience in these advanced techniques.

At our neurosurgical clinic, we provide consultations for both brain and spinal conditions. When necessary, imaging studies (MRI, CT, X-ray, etc.) are performed at our clinic to inform decision-making. Every case is discussed in detail with the patient, reviewing findings, diagnosis, and treatment options, ensuring a shared decision-making process for the planned care.
