High blood pressure, diabetes, high blood fat levels. Three well-known chronic diseases with the same underlying cause. Obesity, or obesity in medical terms.
The abnormal build-up of fat in the body produces inflammatory substances that increase the risk of these diseases, partly through insulin resistance. Although we can see the excess weight on our bodies and feel its impact on our quality of life (e.g. the ability to cope with everyday stress), the consequences remain silent for a long time. If left untreated, they can lead to serious complications.
Untreated high blood pressure can lead to cardiovascular disease (heart attack, stroke, heart failure) and kidney damage, while diabetes can cause eye, kidney and nervous system complications... High cholesterol is the most important risk factor for atherosclerosis and causes no symptoms, but can only be diagnosed by laboratory tests. And diabetes accelerates this process, contributing to the development of heart disease.
These diseases are closely linked, partly causing and partly aggravating each other. This is known as the cardiometabolic syndrome, which can lead to strokes or heart attacks, which are often fatal.
At the MIND Clinic, we apply in daily practice the clinical concept of complex management of cardiometabolic syndrome proposed by the American Heart Association at the end of 2023.
